16×20”
Original Colored Pencil Drawing
This drawing is based on my husbands and my first trip to Mackinac Island, which just so happened to be his birthday. I had always grown up going to the island and have created so many drawings of the island over the years. This trip though was beyond special because I was viewing Mackinac through his eyes.
It felt like we had the island to ourselves. We explored so many places, laughed, ate the best food, and laughed constantly. I also felt like I had some firsts, which made this so special.
I started this drawing September 2025 and was not able to finish until October 2026. At the time, I felt so overwhelmed with all of the small details. I had never worked larger than 16×20” so it was foreign to me. I drawing very detailed boats and buildings that were all smaller than half a square inch, so I decided to put this drawing on pause. In the end, I am so glad that I allowed myself to grow as an artist so that I could complete this piece at the best of my abilities.
In total this drawing took over 100 hours and 79 colored pencils to create. It also felt like a true labor of love. My husband and I actually stayed at the green bed and breakfast in this drawing, in the top of the turret. Now we can look back and be reminded of our idyllic adventure.
If you love the feeling of joy radiating through your body as well as the deep peace of the end of the day, this drawing is for you. Allow yourself to step back, reset, and enjoy the moment right within your own home.
