Original Colored Pencil Drawing

This drawing is from my trip to Rome where I had the opportunity of going here with my Dad. He had never gone to Italy before so there were a lot of fun firsts in this adventure.

We went and explored the Colosseum and were completely blown away by its sheer magnitude as well as the architectural feat it is. This in particular view caught my eye because it was not from the point of view of looking at the Colosseum, but from looking inside out. I loved seeing the hustle and bustle of the Italian streets below as well as all of the beautiful colors that encompassed them.

The reference that inspired this trip was one of my favorites so I knew it would turn into a drawing. When I originally began working on it, I immediately felt overwhelmed. The details were so small, especially everything in between the railings. I had to step away from this drawing, which is very atypical for me.

Seven months of working on the drawing and having to take breaks, it was finally finished. I learned so much while creating this. Good things do take time and sometimes you need to build up skill before continuing.

In total I used 96 colored pencils and I’m still completely enamored by all of the small details and colors involved. The easter eggs featured are: my initials and birthday on the bus and “deely” on one of the street signs.

This drawing is perfect for you to feel as if you have a window looking out of the Colosseum right within your own home. It is as if Italy could become a part of your daily life.
